History
ASSOCIATION OF BI-STATE MOTOR CARRIERS, INC.
The original core group of the Bi-State Harbor Carriers consisted of representatives of the Port Authority of NY-NJ and trucking companies that serviced the port of New York-New Jersey. It was formed in 1977 to discuss and respond to port related issues that affected the trucking community. In 1983, as the scope of the discussions enlarged, the group was expanded and encouraged to become affiliated with the New Jersey Motor Truck Association (NJMTA). This gave them the support of that statewide trucking group, since many of the issues involved the state, and the NJMTA had the power to negotiate and lobby for legislative relief.
In 2002, the members of the Bi-State Board decided that we had outgrown this relationship, and decided to form a new organization, independent and not subject to the restraints of the NJMTA, which had, in several instances impeded the efforts to act in behalf of the member’s interests. This meant that we could now more actively pursue the problems that exist here in this port, and can also represent members serving other ports as well.
Our name is new, but the Officers and Board members are still the same dedicated group that has been responsible for most of the intermodal service improvements that have occurred in this port over the past several years. We will continue to make a difference by maintaining our focus on improving the public perception and status of our industry and achieving our goal of making the NY-NJ port more user-friendly, productive and competitive.
Our present membership consists of trucking companies and firms allied to this industry, some of whom are domiciled in the surrounding states of Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts. Our members are responsible for providing approximately 80% of the truck transportation attributable to the Port of New York-New Jersey.
