Samuel Lees Cunninghame served as the government relations director for the Association of Bi-State Motor Carriers, actively lobbying to protect and promote the interests of our membership. He was also the executive director and past president of the New Jersey Motor Truck Association for 15 years, and President of L.J. Kennedy Trucking Company in Kearny, NJ for 15 years.

Born in Plainfield, NJ, Sam graduated from Plainfield High School in 1948 and attended Miami University. He joined the Marine Corps in 1951 and served his country with honor. He graduated from the New Jersey State Police Academy in 1955 (Badge No. 1396), served for 18 years and took early retirement as a sergeant 1st class. Sam was loved by his family, friends and co-workers alike, and is remembered as a devoted husband and proud father. He was a member of the Spring Lake Golf Club, the American Legion, State Trooper Non-Commissioned Officers Association, Friends of N.J. Transportation Heritage Center, National Rotary Association, and the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundatino. Sam was also a member of the Newark Traffic Club, Jersey Coast Traffic Club, 2nd Marine Division Association (Mid-Atlantic Chapter), Navy League of the U.S., Marine Corps League, VFW, Manasquan Elks Lodge No. 2534 and the Northwestern University traffic Institute Association.

Sam passed away on July 18, 2013, but his dedication and advocacy to the Association of Bi-State Motor Carriers will be remembered and celebrated each year with the awarding of two scholarships in his name. The Association is proud to sponsor the Samuel L. Cunninghame Memorial Scholarship in celebration of Sam’s enduring legacy of service to our members and their families.
